Art Exhibition

Bazeos Tower – Naxos

June 3rd – September 28th, 2017

Daily: 10:00-17:00

Phantoms may disappear with the light of day but that is not the case with the phantasmagoric world of art created by five artists of different origins, in the evocative interiors of the Bazeos Tower, built in the 17th century, and in the surrounding countryside of inland Naxos.

The artists:

Irini Gonou (GR)     https://irinigonou.gr/

Miyuki Kido (JP)  http://fresh-winds.com/miyuki-kido/

Yorgos Papafigos (GR)  http://yorgospapafigos.com/cv

Collin-Mura Smith (USA)  http://fresh-winds.com/collin-mura-smith/

Manuela Zervudachi (FR)  http://www.manuelazervudachi.com/

travel around the island and are hosted for a time in the Bazeos Tower, where they work on and render, each by their own personal means (painting, sculpture, video, installations) the concept of ghost, illusion, the unfamiliar, the imaginary, giving form through their works to a universe that shifts away from realism and ordinary reality, towards allegory and symbolism.

Disregarding the sun, the bright sun of summer, they entice us to look behind the self evident, into the darkness, to sense the invisible, to confront fear, desire, eroticism but also to range the countryside, trailing age-old earthly tracks that lead to forgotten relics.

Last summer’s successful conjunction of seven international artists at the Bazeos Tower, resulted in the passionate and creative narrative of the New Mythologies exhibition. This year, the artistic collective is renewed with new collaborators from Greece, France, Japan, and the United States. These are artists possessed by a spirit of collectivity and a desire to draw inspiration from the energy and spirituality which the surroundings emit.

The experience of living in the old tower, socializing with the locals, contact with the island’s natural environment and the physical elements available, the light and wind, are some of the components that are molded with the artist’s talent and transformed on site into a work, an in situ installation. The outcome is experiential and amenable to a metaphysical approach, and more.

The tower and its artworks, the 9th century ruins of the Byzantine monastery of Kaloritsa on the adjacent hillside, the trails leading through fields to ancient monuments, discretely signalled by the artist’s interventions, become passages for getting away from the here and now, projection screens of thoughts and feelings.

They evoke from the unconscious the shadow each of us is afraid to face, bring about the reconciliation and integration of the fragmented self.

The exhibition is accompanied and complemented by a theatrical performance and nights of readings.
